Build a Positive, Safe Online Presence
Building a personal brand starts with character — not followers. Here's how young athletes and families can navigate social media safely and authentically.
Healthy social media habits
Think before you post
Run the 'screenshot test' — would I be okay if a coach, recruiter, or grandparent saw this?
Keep personal info private
No live location, school schedule, or family details. Privacy = safety.
Separate athlete persona from private life
Public posts represent your brand. Keep personal moments for close friends.
Quality over quantity
Consistency and authenticity build trust faster than posting constantly.
Red flags: scams & DM awareness
- Unsolicited DMs offering 'guaranteed' deals or money for personal info
- Requests to pay upfront fees for 'exposure' or sponsorship opportunities
- Pressure to act fast or keep an offer 'secret' from parents
- Fake brand accounts impersonating real companies
- Anyone asking a minor to communicate without a parent/guardian present
⚠️ If something feels off, STOP. Tell a parent, coach, or trusted adult immediately. Legitimate brands don't pressure minors into secrecy.
Leadership & character
Your brand isn't just your highlight reel — it's how you treat teammates, opponents, and people online. Coaches, recruiters, and brands notice. Character on and off the field is the single most underrated piece of any athlete's long-term brand.
